News came out this morning from the Celtics that both Kyrie Irving and Marcus Smart will be out for tonight’s game in Brooklyn.
I’d imagine that Terry/Jaylen will take their place in the starting five which gives those two an opportunity to redeem themselves after some subpar hoops. We all remember how effective Rozier was down the stretch/in the playoffs while he was starting and this year has been no different. As a starter he’s averaged 14 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.3 assists on 48.7/41.7/88.9 shooting splits compared to 8/3.9/2.5 on 36.3/33.8/75.6 as a reserve. Hopefully he can parlay his success as a starter into a solid game tonight then take that success and apply it when Kyrie returns (big ask I know, but I’ll hold out hope).
Another guy with a chance to open some eyes tonight will be Brad Wanamaker. I’ve blogged about him the last time he got some solid run against Dallas (21 minutes, 8 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals on 3-6 from the floor).
With Terry struggling and the Celtics having some bench issues, this is a prime chance for Wanamaker to make his case for a spot in the rotation. The Celtics really don’t have many ball handlers on the roster aside from Kyrie, Smart, Terry, and Wanamaker so I imagine we’ll be seeing a lot of Wanamaker tonight. He’s been awaiting any opportunity that presents itself and I hope he’s able to make an strong impact tonight.
While they’re both out tonight, Irving and Smart expect to be back for their showdown with the first place Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night.
